Environmental science schools are shaping a better future – here’s how

Only one thing is certain in this world we live in: everything changes. The lakes and rainfall of India, the ancient rock formations of Turkey and the sandy beaches of the Caribbean islands each of these natural wonders is changing, exacerbated by external forces. It’s no secret that humans collectively exert massive force through rapid development. In fact, we have increased the global temperature by 2°C in the last century a number that may seem small, but greatly increases the accumulated heat and it’s seriously affecting biodiversity. If we are to envision a future, it must involve the deep knowledge and practice of environmental science.

Environmental experts are at the forefront of the fight against climate change. They know that mitigating unsustainable practices is no longer enough; now we need to innovate solutions in every industry so the world has a chance to heal. The next generation of environmental scientists therefore needs the insight and training to design frameworks that respond appropriately to the challenges of the 21st century.

If you are passionate about nature and want to learn the skills to protect it, an environmental science degree may be perfect for you. Let your search begin here; find out how these schools could help you become a future leader in the fight against climate change.

Set in the stunning natural landscape of South West England, the University of Plymouth School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (SoGEES) invites you to learn through exploration. Verdant national parks, colorful cities, and a 650-mile coastline provide the perfect setting to immerse yourself in a hands-on undergraduate curriculum, both in and out of the classroom.

Choose from the BSc (Hons) Environmental Management and Sustainability, BSc (Hons) Environmental SciencesWhere BSc (Hons) Environmental Science with Foundation Year depending on your career goals. “Our study programs are designed with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in mind and prepare students for the world of work,” says school principal Professor Jon Shaw. These courses have recently been refreshed to align their skills and content with the challenges of the 21st century. Each course is interdisciplinary in nature, allowing students to envision and amplify real-world applications of what they learn.

Once pandemic travel restrictions are lifted, students will also be able to participate in field courses putting the material taught into practice in spectacular locations at home and abroad. They can explore the possibility of undertaking an exchange program in the United States, Canada, Australia or elsewhere. An environmental degree allows you to make a real difference. In the end, you might even specialize with a Graduate Diploma, a range of which is also offered at SoGEES. “Our academic staff share their pioneering research in various fields, including climate change, biodiversity, conservation and sustainability, in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. By applying the latest techniques in the lab and in the field, you’ll graduate ready to shape the future of fields, from ecosystem management to environmental monitoring and beyond,” says program lead Dr. Dr Alison Stokes.

With Finland being a pioneer in powerful climate research, it is no surprise that the University of Helsinki is positioned at the forefront of this charge. At Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, research is robust in the areas of molecular and integrative sciences; biology of organisms and evolution; as well as ecosystems and the environment. It is the largest and most extensive research and teaching center of the university.

You can start with a Bachelor of Science and progress to a master’s program in Ecology and evolutionary biology Where Environmental Change and Global Sustainability. Students receive an overview of highly cited researchers and glean project industry updates from their professors, while developing their own understanding of environmental science, from the molecular to the ecosystem level. Want to go further? There is also a strong doctoral program, which produces around 60 faculty graduates each year.

The faculty has biological stations at Kilpisjarvi in Lapland and Lami in southern Finland, which offer unique opportunities to explore the country’s natural environment. Promoting the spirit of interfaculty research is the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Sciences, where you can find a place for your expertise in the grand scheme of green racing. Graduates will be prepared to advise and lead in research institutes, government, industry, schools and universities.

Rigor, creativity, social responsibility and ethical commitment. These are the qualities you will hone through your degree in environmental sciences at the University of Barcelona Faculty of Biologywhich is a leading scientific institute in Spain.
